Gettin' The Job Done....American Made
Danny is an unexpected, very welcome gift, a second
chance, and a work in progress.
Danny came back to me 19 hours after I had to say good-bye to his
mom. I can’t tell you how much it meant to me, to have a tiny piece of Reva still
living with me. I had given all of her puppies to other people. Danny’s return
helped fill the void. Danny was returned because he was a poor fit….to put it
mildly. Danny’s family needed a family sedan kinda dog….Danny is a Porsche…..
toooo much dog for the situation. After several attempts and talks, it was a
mutual decision for Danny to return home. Thank you, Elaine.
The more I am around Danny, the more I realize he is a replay of his
grandma, Shania. His mom and dad, have very little to do with Danny’s make-up
and personality. He fights against any rule or control he finds unreasonable, which
is most. He has a high ability to shake off most corrections. He’s an adrenaline
junkie….a restless spirit. Worst of all, he has his grandmother’s voice. It’s eerie
how close his voice matches hers when he gets excited. He is also extremely
loving, wanting to be with me on a constant basis. As I mentioned in Shania’s
tribute, I felt unfinished with Shania’s training and the relationship we had. I knew
I had taken the wrong path with her. I didn’t find my current way of working with
a dog in herding until after Shania had retired. Danny is presenting me with a
chance to try again. A chance to rewrite the chapter of how I work with a dog with
this kind of personality.
The one trait that I know Danny did receive from his mom, is talent.
Even at this early stage, Danny is showing me some brilliant moves. Horse people
use the euphemistic phrase “for experienced riders only”. That pretty much sums
up Danny. Less skill, less knowledge, and he’ll dump you on your butt. A few
more miles under your belt…and he may still dump you on your butt a time or
two….but WOW….whata ride!
Danny and I are currently working together in herding and obedience.
We are looking to finish his Rally Novice title soon.
